Daniel Farke on incoming new Leeds United signing, likely defender exit and startling Augsburg win verdict
Daniel Farke after Leeds United’s 4-0 win against FC Augsburg.
Daniel Farke admits a deal for an incoming new Leeds United defender is pretty close and that another Whites man is set to be on his way.
Leeds took on Bundesliga side FC Augsburg in their final pre-season friendly on Saturday and recorded an impressive 4-0 victory, after which Farke said his men could be even better.
Much of the focus though was on news that Leeds had agreed a deal with Borussia Monchengladbach to sign Switzerland international centre-back Nico Elvedi amid reports that Sebastiaan Bornauw is on his way to Hamburg on an initial loan deal.
Asked about Elvedi and Bornauw post match, Farke said: “We are not completely done and for that I have to be a bit careful.
"But I also don't want to lie, we are pretty, pretty close that something that happens.
"I got information just before kick off, I think 30 minutes before that there could also be something happen to Sebastiaan right now so for that we also decided to keep it quiet and to let him with the squad because we didn’t want to have any distraction.
"But my decision was also to let him on the bench. It looks very likely that something that will happen in the next hours or 24 or 48 hours but I am working too long in football and I know that everything is only sealed when medicals are done and the thing is signed."
Reflecting on his side’s display against Augsburg, Farke said: "We can play better than today.
"In the first half there were situations when our first touch was not tidy and a bit sloppy would be a bit too negative but not focused in possession and in transition moment could be a bit quicker and a bit more awareness.
"But I told the lads after in the dressing room I have to calm myself down a bit because it's the fifth week of pre season this week after having the long trip in the US and this week with lots of travelling and also to Dublin.
"We were back home at three in the morning the next day and we had another tactical meeting and tactical training session so I put lots of input in the last week and you could perhaps that I had tried my players a lot during this week and they were not 100 per cent sharp and fresh so also a bit understandable that we were not perfect and not flawless.
"I always want us to be perfect and during the games I am sometimes a bit angry with the situation and I feel we can be even better.
"But to win this game 4-0 and to create even more chances and to have another clean sheet, it's not too bad overall and definitely a good final game of pre season for us."
