Ongoing speculation surrounding captain Callum McGregor has also added to questions over the composition of Celtic’s midfield heading into the new campaign. Should a move materialise, Gbane would offer a different dynamic to Martin O’Neill’s current options. Standing at 6ft 2in, the 24-year-old is a natural holding midfielder capable of shielding the back four, a profile many supporters have argued Celtic have lacked in recent years. French journalist Sebastien Denis of Foot Mercato reports that Celtic face competition from West Ham and Trabzonspor for Gbane’s signature. Reims are said to be prepared to consider offers if an acceptable bid is received. Gbane only joined the French club in February 2025 in a deal worth around £4.4 million, but Reims were relegated from Ligue 1 later that season. He featured in just over half of the club’s league fixtures last campaign as they fell short in their attempt to secure an immediate return to the top flight. As well as operating in midfield, Gbane has experience playing in central defence. He made his senior debut for Côte d’Ivoire last summer, although he was not included in the squad for this summer’s World Cup. Before arriving in France, the midfielder enjoyed spells in Croatia, Russia and Portugal, building experience across several European leagues. West Ham, meanwhile, are also credited with an interest after strengthening their financial position this summer, having reportedly banked £80 million from the sale of Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham.
