Newcastle ratings with 9/10 youngster who could save United millions as Dedic deal close The Magpies now have just one game left of pre-season but this was a useful workout against the men from the Bundesliga On a day in which Newcastle United closed in on £30m deal for a right-back in Amar Dedic - it was a lad from Stanley who looked capable of saving the club millions. Step forward Mason Miley who, not for the first time in pre-season, barely put a foot wrong and looked like he'd been playing top level stuff for years! Miley won all his tackles, blocked shots and won ground duels all afternoon, and did not look daunted in front of a crowd just shy of 40,000 fans. In the German side's first attack, Ibrahim Maza was allowed to create space before curling home from outside the box at Gallowgate and whipping the ball viciously past Lukas Hornicek. But Newcastle were level before half-time after Anthony Elanga's corner was hung up high at the back post for Malick Thiaw for the skipper to power home a header. How Newcastle fared against Leverkusen: Lukas Hornicek 6 Didn't have much chance with first goal, took a few crosses well. Could have done better with second goal. Mason Miley 9 Scrapped and battled as he bids for a big prize - to start against Liverpool. He may only be 17 but he is playing above his years. No wonder the backroom team were heaping praise on him throughout the contest. Jaissle offered him a big hug as he went off with a knock late on. Leverkusen scored moments after he went off. Malick Thiaw 8 Grabbed the equaliser at a great time and then kept the defensive rearguard together. Battled hard and made some key challenges. Sven Botman 7 A much more reassuring display from the Dutchman with Dan Burn now back in contention. Lewis Hall 7 With more minutes in the legs, Hall looked a lot like his old self with a combative display. Lewis Miley 7 Back just 102 days after breaking his leg in training. Got over early challenge and progressed well from there. Was always going to play just 45 minutes. Sean Steur 7 Not everything came off for him but he can handle the intensity. Offered the defence a good layer of protection. Anthony Elanga 8 Looked delighted with a well executed corner that looked like a training ground move to set up Thiaw for the equaliser. Harvey Barnes 6 Made a couple of good recoveries but did not threaten enough. Yoane Wissa 7 Was involved with a couple of chances and rolled in Woltemade for what should have been a strike at the start of the second half. Nick Woltemade 6 Had a mixed afternoon. Needs a goal and should have had one when Wissa slipped him at the Gallowgate End. Needs a confidence boost ahead of the new campaign after tough World Cup. Subs Rory Finneran 7 (for Lewis Miley 46) An interesting option for Jaissle. An excellent passer of the ball. Miodrag Pivas (for Mason Miley 80) Sean Neave (for Woltemade 86) *Subs must play 15 minutes to get a mark. Rate the players Who stood out for you today?
