Baur was having lunch with his girlfriend Emma, when his phone suddenly began lighting up with multiple notifications. Not unusual for a youngster these days, but in Baur’s case it was all down to news of his impending transfer to Glasgow. Romano had posted his famous catchphrase ‘let’s go’ to his 28 million followers on his X and instagram accounts, and this time it was Baur himself who was the centre of attention due to his impending move to Celtic. “My phone just started ringing all the time,” recalled Mika Baur. Baur was not exactly in the dark over his proposed move to Scotland’s most successful football club, so he would have been aware of work going on in the background. “The first call or at least meeting was a couple of weeks before,” he explained. “But it was not like, ‘okay, it will definitely happen’.” But after Romano’s update, which is akin to a seal of approval these days, the 22 year old knew that Glasgow would be his next career destination, even if did take a further three weeks to conclude a deal. Although he looks physically light, Baur says his experience in the German lower tiers has toughened him up, a trait that will prepare him for the hustle and bustle of Scottish football. “I was 17 when I had my first experience in the third division,” he explained. “I’m not quite sure, maybe over 80 or 90 matches. It’s a really tough league too. Big guys, many in fights. It’s part of the game and helps you to develop in terms of the physical side.” “I think it was good for me to play there,” Mika added. “It really was the first step, then the second division, and now the big stage!” Baur describes himself as a ‘number 6’ or ‘number 8’ when asked about his midfield role. “I want the ball at my feet, I want to create something,” was his short assessment of his capabilities. Miko Baur is in line to make his Celtic debut against Dundee United at Tannadice this evening in the Premier Sports Cup.
