Makosso reflects on 'beautiful memories' as he leaves Luton for Auxerre Centre half leaves Town for French top flight club Defender Christ Makosso insisted he has ‘beautiful memories’ of his time at Kenilworth Road after completing his move to French Ligue 1 side Auxerre for an undisclosed fee last night. The 22-year-old moved to the Hatters from Belgian side RWD Molenbeek back on December 31, 2024, as after breaking into Luton’s Championship side under previous manager Matt Bloomfield, he went on to play 13 times that term, winning the SoLYD Young Player of the Season and the Luton Town Supporters’ Trust's Signing of the Season. With Luton relegated to League One for the 2025-26 campaign, Makosso had a hit and miss start last season, serving a three match ban for a violent conduct charge in the 2-0 win at Peterborough United and then dropped to the bench at Lincoln City when he turned up late for a team meeting. Once Jack Wilshere took over, Makosso saw his game time severely limited, restricted to just five outings, as he was sent out on loan to Oxford United to reunite with Bloomfield once more. Having made seven appearances, the centre half’s timekeeping was then called into question once more, left out of the team to face West Bromwich Albion, and didn’t play again for the U’s, who were relegated to League One. Speculation increased that his time in Bedfordshire was over, and that was confirmed yesterday when he moved to the Stade Abbé-Deschamps to join a side who finished 15th in the highest echelon of French football last term. Writing on his Instagram page, Makosso said: “Each chapter has its history, and today it’s time for me to close this one with great gratitude. “I would like sincerely to say thanks to CEO Gary Sweet, the management, all the people who contributed to my arrival at the club, the coaches, the entire staff, the people who work every day in the shadows, my teammates and supporters. Thank you for your trust, support and all the moments we shared. Wearing this jersey was a real honour, and I will keep very beautiful memories of this adventure. I leave Luton Town with great respect and gratitude, wishing the club and all the people who are part of it a lot of success for the future." The move didn’t go off completely without a hitch, as the Hatters wrote in an official statement: “We are now in a position that all paperwork has been signed to announce that only in the last few minutes has Christ Makosso joined French club Auxerre on a permanent transfer for an undisclosed fee. "Christ joined the Hatters from Belgian club RWDM on New Year’s Eve 2024 and went on to make 28 appearances across the second half of the 2024/25 season and opening half of last term. He then moved to Oxford United on loan last January, making seven appearances as the U’s suffered relegation from the Championship. “The Ligue 1 club decided to drop the news of the deal before paperwork was officially signed off. Now it has been, we say a heartfelt merci beaucoup to Christ, who quickly endeared himself to Hatters fans in his short time at Kenilworth Road, and wish him every success for his future career.” Meanwhile, Auxerre themselves wrote: “AJ Auxerre is pleased to announce the signing of Christ Makosso, a 22-year-old Congolese international centre-back, from Luton Town. He will wear the number 15. Born in Brazzaville, Christ began his career in Congo, at Ajax de Moungali and then CARA Brazzaville, before joining FC Sochaux-Montbéliard in January 2023. There he signed his first professional contract and discovered Ligue 2. "After a stint at RWD Molenbeek, where he played 23 matches, he signed with Luton Town in January 2025. Making 28 appearances in the Hatters' jersey, he was voted the club's best young player at the end of the 2024-2025 season, before being loaned to Oxford United for the second half of last season. A five-time Congolese international, the 1.92m defender comes to continue his development at AJA and bring his athletic qualities, power and impact in duels to our back line.”
