Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has heaped praise on Landon Emenalo, the son of former Super Eagles defender Michael Emenalo, following his loan move to the Scottish giants during the current summer window. The 18-year-old left-back, who is highly rated by Chelsea, has been part of Xabi Alonso’s pre-season squad as the Blues prepare for the 2026/2027 campaign. Emenalo has featured for Chelsea at U18 and U21 level and was named in the first team squad for the pre-season tour of Asia, playing in the 6-4 victory over Western Sydney. Speaking ahead of Celtic’s clash against Dundee United, O’Neill praised the youngster’s qualities and revealed that the club see him as a potential option to provide cover in the left-back position for Kieran Tierney. “I think he is a really fine young player,” O’Neill said. “I think we need that position covered because of Kieran {Tierney}. Kieran did exceptionally well last season, having being playing with injury since Arsenal.” The Celtic manager also revealed that Emenalo is currently dealing with an injury but expressed his desire to have the youngster available once he recovers. “This young man has definitely got talent. He has got a bit of an injury at the moment and we are hoping that that would clear up shortly. If it does, I would love to have him,” he added. Celtic are reportedly keen to provide Emenalo with regular opportunities as they look to share the role with Tierney. With first-team opportunities potentially limited at Chelsea due to the club’s lack of European football, Emenalo will be keen to use his loan spell in Scotland to prove his qualities and continue his development.
