According to a report from the Daily Mail, Derby County are exploring a move for Huddersfield Town midfielder Tom Iorpenda as John Eustace looks to strengthen his midfield options. The 21-year-old has emerged as a potential target for the Rams following an impressive loan spell with Notts County last season, where he played a key role in their promotion from League Two. Iorpenda is reportedly keen on the opportunity to step up to Championship football after enjoying a breakthrough campaign at Meadow Lane. A Breakthrough Season Iorpenda spent the 2025/26 campaign at Meadow Lane and enjoyed arguably the most productive season of his young career. The midfielder scored three goals and provided seven assists as Notts County secured promotion to League One through the play-offs. He played a part in their emphatic 3-0 victory over Salford City at Wembley in May, with the result securing a return to the third tier. His performances were recognised by both the club’s supporters and his teammates, with Iorpenda collecting the Fans’ Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards. He was also recognised for his contribution to the campaign by winning Notts County’s Goal of the Season award. The midfielder has now returned to Huddersfield following the conclusion of his loan spell, with one year remaining on his current contract. Derby Need Midfield Reinforcements Iorpenda’s contract situation could leave Huddersfield facing a decision over whether to cash in this summer rather than risk losing the midfielder for nothing further down the line. The Terriers already have several midfield options available to them, including Ryan Ledson, David Kasumu, Ethan Brierley, Herbie Kane, Marcus McGuane and Antony Evans. For Derby, however, the need for further midfield reinforcements is arguably more pressing. Bobby Clark has already joined permanently following his successful loan spell last season, while Lewis Travis and Oscar Fraulo remain among the other senior options available to Eustace. Kenzo Goudmijn is not expected to feature prominently in Derby’s plans, while Liam Thompson has been linked with a move away from Pride Park. That could leave Eustace looking to bring another midfielder through the door before the transfer window closes. Championship Opportunity Could Appeal Iorpenda has already had a taste of Championship football with Huddersfield, although his senior experience at that level remains limited. His breakthrough season at Notts County has now given him the opportunity to potentially take another step forward, and a move to Derby would provide him with the chance to compete regularly at Championship level. Huddersfield are likely to place a significant valuation on a player who impressed so heavily during his loan spell, particularly with another year remaining on his contract.
