The Daily Record reports that Niko Sigur is Celtic’s main target to succeed Arne Engels, despite Gvidas Gineitis being heavily linked in recent weeks. Sigur has featured for Split in recent matches against Žalgiris during their 9-2 aggregate win over two legs, meaning he would be ineligible to face LASK on Wednesday. He would only be able to play in European competition for Celtic this season after the play-off against the Austrian champions. Mika Baur is reportedly viewed more as Reo Hatate’s successor and is a more attack-minded midfielder. He would not provide the same level of height and physicality that Engels has brought over the last two years. The Belgian has also thrived in European games and will be a big miss for Celtic, particularly under Martin O’Neill. Engels has undoubtedly played some of his best football alongside Callum McGregor at the heart of midfield. Hatate, meanwhile, is being eyed by Panathinaikos, with Celtic reportedly demanding a fee in the seven-figure range. It remains to be seen whether the Greek side will make an official bid, but the Japanese playmaker looks set to depart this summer after falling out of favour under O’Neill towards the end of last season.
