The American men, as expected, briefly looked like they might challenge the World Record in the 400 free relay on Friday night in Irvine before eventually succumbing to the famous Jason Lezak anchor split, but they still won the race in 3:09.01.
The split of the race for Team USA was a 46.98 from Patrick Sammon, who rebounded after being the slowest leg of the American 800 free relay. His choice in that relay received a lot of public criticism as being the one that prevented an American World Record, though they still easily cruised to gold.
Unlike in that relay (1:45.67 at Nationals, 1:46.15 in the individual, 1:46.92 on the relay), Sammon was much faster here than he was in his individual at Pan Pacs or US Nationals.
In the 100 at Nationals, he swam 47.83; earlier in the week at Pan Pacs he swam 47.62 for silver; and on the relay he swam 46.98.
That truly seemed like the difference-making leg for the Americans.
The Australian men, racing without their two best in Flynn Southam and Kyle Chalmers, put up a surprisingly-good fight though, flexing the sprint depth that has begun to bleed over from the women’s side to the men’s.
That included a 46.99 anchor split from Harrison Turner, which was an important revelation headed toward LA28.
Turner, 22, swam 48.34 in the individual 100 free final and has a lifetime best of 48.22 from this year’s Trials meet. That means his split on the relay was a whopping 1.23 seconds better than his best flat start time.
21-year-old Edward Sommerville told a similar story. His best flat start coming into the week was 48.37 done last year, he dropped a 48.03 in the individual event final, and then split 47.31 on the third leg of this relay.
Other Splits of Note:
- Gabriel Jett split 47.74 on the American “B” relay, the same split as Destin Lasco did on the “A” relay.
- Canadian Antoine Sauve split 48.36 on their “B” relay, which would have been the fastest split on Canada’s “A” relay. The gaps weren’t huge though, as the Canadians had seven of their eight swimmers go 48.4 to 48.6.
- Butterflier Jarden Eaton of South Africa stepped up and led off their “B” relay in 51.73. He could’ve made a second-or-more difference on the “A,” though that still wouldn’t have changed South Africa’s ranking.
- Japan’s Shoon Mistunaga, who recently returned from a doping suspension, was their best split for bronze in 47.72. That comes after swimming 48.77 and 49.21 in prelims and finals of the 100 free, respectively.
