Portsmouth boss makes surprise transfer call as player hunt continues
A Pompey transfer update from John Mousinho this afternoon, with the Blues boss outlining an unlikely route over further defensive recruits.
John Mousinho has confirmed Pompey are in the hunt for a new full-back as their transfer chase continues.
But the Blues boss is prepared to move for another right-back to bolster his squad, as he looks to strengthen his options for a third campaign at Championship level.
And that means not looking to bring in any new faces in the problem left-back position, where Mousinho’s squad is currently looking exposed.
Pompey may not recruit left-back despite lack of options
Pompey have signed six players in the summer window, with Odin Bailey, Eoin Kenny, Daniel Bielica, Rocco Shein, Marko Milovanović and Luke Brook-Smith the players through the door to date.
There are clear holes in the group at present, however, with Pompey light in attacking areas - particularly out wide as they got to West Ham United in the Carabao Cup this weekend.
They are also without a specialist left-back option for the trip to the London Stadium, with the call made not to hand triallist Arvin Appiah a contract.
Sidelined pair Connor Ogilvie and Jacob Farrell are the players at the club in that department, with Farrell appearing to not have a future at PO4.
Despite that, Pompey may not look to bring in a player in that area and instead look to land a new right-back.
They can call on Terry Devlin in that area with Zak Swanson fit again after a knee issue, while Jordan Williams has joined League One side Blackpool on loan.
It’s the flexibility of Swanson which is allowing Pompey to consider a route which many would’ve viewed as unlikely.
When asked if there’s a need for a full-back to arrive, Mousinho said: ‘I think so, with where we are with full-backs at the moment.
‘We have a fit Terry Devlin, Swanny (Swanson) coming back from injury and an unfit Connor Ogilvie and Jacob Farrell.
‘So we need to make sure we’re not struggling in that area.
‘Yes (it could be a specialist left-back) but because of Swanny’s adaptability and the fact he can play on both sides, there's a possibility we could potentially bring in someone on the other side.
‘We could then go with Swanny and Connor Ogilvie as our two left-backs, with Terry and someone else as our right-backs.
‘We just want to keep our options open there - and Swanny’s versatility gives us that option.’
