It did not come as too much of a surprise to see two names not in the nominated squad. After being sent on loan for the second half of the season, to Blackpool and Sheffield Wednesday respectively, I thought it was odds on that Reuell Walters and Jerry Yates would be off-loaded this summer. However, if one poster on – X – gets his way then both could be headed to the same club, Blackpool. Walters, whilst on loan at Bloomfield Road, made 16 appearances and scored 1 goal, but became a fans favourite and a player they wanted the clubs hierarchy to sign on a permanent basis, but so far it has not happened. Yates also has Blackpool connections having previously made 124 appearances for the seaside-based club and, in the process, scoring 42 goals, the most productive period of his career. Now, to be honest, I don’t know if there is even the slightest bit of interest in the duo from Blackpool, but I do know one thing, one thing that forms the crux of this article, while they remain on the books, at Kenilworth Road, basically playing the role of outcasts, they are a financial drain, the longer it takes to shift them, the more money it costs Luton Town Football Club. Although I have no doubt both are keen to settle their futures as quickly as possible, neither will want to make a move that does not suit them, not while they are still being paid the salaries they agreed on when they first came to Luton Town. Perhaps, once the season gets started, both may feel the urge to get playing again. One method of exit commonly used, in such situations, is one of leaving by mutual consent, perhaps with a cash incentive to do so. Looking at the duo, I would suggest that Walters, being the younger of the two, might find it the easiest to find a new club. Although strikers are always in demand, I can’t help thinking that the poor season Yates had, last time out, may deter some clubs from pursuing his services.
