First win for Sporting CP 14 Aug, 2026 The team beat Vitória SC 3-2 on their home debut Sporting Clube de Portugal defeated Vitória SC 3-2 on Matchday 2 of the Liga Portugal season, after storming ahead in the game and experiencing a more difficult second half. On the team's return to Alvalade, coach Rui Borges made a single change to the starting XI from the previous week, as Maxi Araújo returned from suspension. It took just nine minutes for a clear chance to emerge, as Fotis Ioannidis broke through on the right, set up by Geny Catamo's trivela pass. The Greek found Flávio Gonçalves alone in the centre of the area and the young striker converted for his first goal for the senior side. 1-0 up, Sporting CP then had to do some defending. Vitória SC had a series of moves upfield in the following minutes, albeit without creating danger in the final third. On 22 minutes, Flávio Gonçalves found Geny Catamo with a long ball and the Mozambican, close to the byline, controlled with his chest, flicked it over a defender and teed up Ioannidis near the six-yard box. His powerful hit on the half-volley left goalkeeper Oliwier Zych helpless, and gave Sporting CP a 2-0 lead. Vitória SC only responded in the 37th minute. Pressing high up the pitch, they recovered possession and Alioune Ndoye found himself in a good position to shoot. Maxi Araújo made a crucial interception, covering to deny the striker the chance. Three minutes later, Vitória SC’s Samu Silva wasted an opportunity. The visitors had forced another error in the midfield, and Oumar Camará promptly passed to the Portuguese, who shot wide. Sergi Altimira punished the visitors from the very next move: the Spaniard, alone and with space in which to work, lined up a rasping shot to get the better of the goalkeeper and extend the lead. Rui Silva needed to deny Oumar Camará and Samu Silva before the halftime whistle, keeping Sporting CP 3-0 in front at the break. Sporting CP came back out less intense, and it was Vitória SC who began to find the spaces they had lacked in the first 45 minutes. In the 55th and 56th minutes, a free kick from the left was headed over by Alioune Ndoye, then, it was Samu Silva who missed an open goal. Vitória SC finally scored in the 66th minute, when Miguel Nogueira combined with Samu Silva. The latter struck from the edge of the area to make it 3-1. Rui Borges reacted immediately, bringing on Luís Guilherme and Luis Suárez, but Vitória SC gained momentum and, in the 69th minute, scored again. Taking advantage of another error in the defence, Tony Strata delivered a cross for Alioune Ndoye to head home. Sporting CP struggled to regain control of the game and build attacks from their own half. They also faced a Gustavo Silva shot that went just millimetres wide of the post. In the final ten minutes, Georgios Vagiannidis was on the receiving end of a crunching tackle and was replaced by Iván Fresneda. Increasing possession in the final moments of the match, Sporting CP secured a 3-2 victory that was their first win of the season. They play at home again next Saturday at 8:30pm, against FC Alverca.
