How Blackpool FC are stocked in each area as start of EFL season approaches Blackpool’s EFL season gets underway against Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup on Saturday. Blackpool have made four signings so far this summer - as the EFL season quickly approaches. The Seasiders head to Blundell Park to take on Grimsby Town in the first round of the Carabao Cup on Saturday afternoon, before welcoming Wycombe Wanderers to Bloomfield Road in their opening League One game seven days later. These fixtures will offer the chance for the new arrivals to make their competitive debuts in Tangerine. Dion Charles and Jordan Williams have both joined the club on loan from Huddersfield Town and Portsmouth respectively, while Ilmari Niskanen has made the switch from Exeter City as a free agent. Karoy Anderson has also been added to Ian Evatt’s squad on a permanent basis on the back of his successful loan stint last term, with an undisclosed fee being agreed with Charlton Athletic. Here’s a closer look at how Blackpool are shaping up in each area: Goalkeepers: Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Franco Ravizzoli This area was sorted nice and early, with Bailey Peacock-Farrell signing a one-year extension to remain at Bloomfield Road at the start of the summer. Franco Ravizzoli is also still with the club as back-up, while youngster Charlie Brier is also on the club’s books. Central defenders: Olly Casey, Fraser Horsfall, Michael Ihiekwe, Andy Lyons, Zac Ashworth, Oluchi Nwankwo This remains an area that needs additional recruitment, with the shortage of options highlighted by Olly Casey, Fraser Horsfall and Michael Ihiekwe all missing the majority of pre-season. Youngster Oluchi Nwankwo has stepped up during the friendlies, but the focus will have to be on what’s best for his development - and that probably means going out on loan to pick up experience rather than being a back-up. Andy Lyons is traditionally a wing-back, but has featured in the back three this summer, as well as parts of last season, and could be seen more as a back up for the centre backs going forward. It’s a similar story on the left for Zac Ashworth - who’s slightly more experienced as a centre back and may have his sights set making that area his own. With James Husband leaving at the end of his contract, the Seasiders certainly do need a first-choice left footer to play in the back three, and probably another body on loan just to provide extra cover. Wing-backs: Jordan Williams, Ilmari Niskanen, CJ Hamilton, Hayden Coulson Wing-back is a key area for Blackpool if Evatt chooses to pursue that style this season. As previously mentioned, Lyons could provide cover on the right, but would be behind new additions Jordan Williams and Ilmari Niskanen, while Ashworth has CJ Hamilton and Hayden Coulson in front of him on the left. With last season’s injury crisis still at the front of everyone’s minds, another versatile figure who could cover both wings would be a welcome addition. Midfielders: Jordan Brown, Albie Morgan, George Honeyman, Josh Bowler, Karoy Anderson, Leighton Clarkson, Theo Upton The midfield is probably the Seasiders’ strongest area at the moment. Getting Anderson back was a major tick, while the key is going to be keeping the likes of George Honeyman and Albie Morgan fit. There’s also Josh Bowler, who is strongest out wide, but could be utilised in a number 10 if necessary. Strikers: Niall Ennis, Tom Bloxham, Dale Taylor, Dion Charles, Kylian Kouassi On paper, there’s enough firepower in the attacking department. Niall Ennis and Dion Charles have both scored a decent amount of goals at this level in the past, while it’s hoped Dale Taylor will build on the solid numbers he generated pre his Bloomfield Road move. There’s also Tom Bloxham, who presented himself as a suitable alternative in that role as well. The main decision to make at the moment is whether Kylian Kouassi stays or goes.
