Leicester City are reportedly close to completing the surprise signing of experienced Ipswich Town winger Wes Burns. The 31-year-old is expected to undergo a medical with the Foxes after becoming available for a move away from Portman Road. Burns only signed a new one-year contract with Ipswich in July, but could now leave the club before the beginning of the new season. A move would reunite the Wales international with Conor Chaplin, who joined Leicester on a three-year contract after being released by Ipswich earlier this summer. Both players were important figures during the Tractor Boys’ rapid rise through the divisions. Burns joined Ipswich from Fleetwood Town in 2021 and helped the Suffolk club secure three promotions during his time at Portman Road. He initially played a major role in their return to the Championship before contributing six goals and four assists as Kieran McKenna’s side earned promotion to the Premier League in 2024. The winger made 18 appearances during Ipswich’s first season back in the top flight, although his campaign was disrupted by a serious knee injury suffered against Liverpool in January 2025. Burns was sidelined for almost a year before returning to senior football on Boxing Day. He marked his comeback with a goal from the bench during a 2-0 victory at Coventry City three days later and also scored at Southampton during the closing weeks of the season. Burns would provide Russell Martin with an experienced option on the right side following Abdul Fatawu’s move in the opposite direction. Leicester have used Will Alves, Riley Carr and Woyo Coulibaly in that position during pre-season, but Burns has considerable experience playing as both a winger and wing-back. The Cardiff-born player began his career with Bristol City and had loan spells at Forest Green Rovers, Oxford United, Cheltenham Town, Fleetwood and Aberdeen. He later spent four years permanently with Fleetwood before joining Ipswich. Burns scored 12 goals and supplied seven assists during his first season at Portman Road. He then registered eight goals and 14 assists during Ipswich’s promotion-winning 2022/23 campaign, establishing himself as one of the most productive wide players in League One. Leicester are also reportedly moving closer to signing Bosnian striker Admir Bristrić as Martin continues to reshape his attacking options. Burns, however, would arrive with proven EFL experience and an understanding of what is required to win promotion from the third tier.
