Newcastle United may have to shelve their interest in William Gomes, with Porto now deciding they will not negotiate the winger’s departure this summer.
According to ESPN Brazil, Porto have decided they will not negotiate William Gomes in the current window.
That decision comes from manager Francesco Farioli, who views the 20-year-old as a fundamental part of his team and has closed the door on a departure for now.
The Magpies have been following William Gomes closely and were previously presented as one of the clubs pushing hardest for him. Now, even a strong approach may have to wait.
Porto already thinking about 2027
William Gomes is not being taken off the market forever. Instead, Porto’s plan is to keep him for the Champions League campaign. They aim to try to increase his value further.
ESPN says the club could then consider selling him in January 2027 or in the summer of 2027. That gives Newcastle a clear indication of the timeline Porto are working with.
Rather than cashing in now, the Portuguese champions want another few months of development at the highest level. Only after this period will they make a decision.
Farioli prefers another sale
There is another detail which underlines just how strongly Farioli wants to keep William Gomes. ESPN reports the Porto manager would prefer Rodrigo Mora to leave instead.
Porto are already in talks with Roma over a permanent transfer for the Portugal international. This suggests the club are prepared to raise money elsewhere while protecting William Gomes.
That means William is not a player Porto would like to keep ‘if possible’. He is being prioritised over another valuable attacking asset.
Newcastle interest may need patience
William Gomes has already started both of Porto’s games this season, featuring from the beginning in the Super Cup and the opening league fixture. He is yet to score or assist, but his immediate role under Farioli is already clear.
That fits with earlier indications that the winger himself was happy to remain in Portugal and experience Champions League football before considering a move elsewhere.
So Newcastle’s interest is still there, but Porto are only entertaining a sale next year. Unless that stance changes dramatically, the Magpies may need to keep William Gomes on their list and return later.
