Tottenham now have a reported €20m (£17.4m) proposal from Porto to consider for Souza, with another source in Brazil saying the Portuguese champions have moved ahead of Benfica. RTI Esporte reports both Portuguese clubs have offered €20m (£17.4m) for the 20-year-old. We already had a hint on Benfica’s alleged offer, but Porto are said to have moved into the lead. President André Villas-Boas is now trying to reach an agreement with Spurs. The outlet also backs up earlier Brazilian reports that Souza’s camp have already agreed conditions with Porto. As we covered earlier, agent Giuliano Bertolucci is (still) in Portugal and involved in the talks. Porto have room to make their move There is an important financial difference between the two Portuguese clubs. Porto currently have considerably more room to operate in the market and could realistically structure a €20m (£17.4m) purchase. Benfica’s situation is much tighter. For Benfica to make that sort of payment upfront, they would likely need to structure the deal creatively or raise further money through player sales. That makes Porto’s reported move easier to understand. There is still some disagreement over how far along things actually are. ESPN Brazil journalist Bruno Andrade recently said talks with Porto were ongoing but not yet advanced, with a permanent transfer and a loan with an option both under discussion. Andrade also said he had never received information about Benfica being involved and questioned whether they could afford such an operation. Not an easy choice for Spurs RTI Esporte are now going considerably further, saying Porto have put €20m (£17.4m) forward and are trying to complete a deal with Tottenham. If accurate, that would represent a €5m (£4.3m) increase on the €15m (£13m) Spurs paid Santos for Souza in January. However, the situation has become a little more delicate for Tottenham, with Destiny Udogie now apparently open to leaving the club. If the Italian does move on, a pathway could finally open up for Souza at left-back, giving Spurs another reason to think carefully before cashing in on the Brazilian.
