PSV Eindhoven director of football Ernest Stewart has detailed what happened to cause to Couhaib Driouech’s move to Rangers to fall through. He had already been in Scotland for a medical on Tuesday with an €8m deal agreed. Rangers, though, have since cancelled the deal over concerns regarding the 24-year-old’s fitness. They want him as an immediate reinforcement, which PSV insist he can be. Rangers think he will take a few weeks to be ready, so cancelled the deal. That’s left PSV annoyed, and wondering what has gone on. This is the fourth major deal this year involving them which has been cancelled at the last minute. All have been with players leaving the Dutch side. According to ED, there has been a common denominator in all of those failed deals – a difference of opinion with the buying club. This time it was Rangers disagreeing after a medical. Now Stewart has provided more details on the whole affair. “In short, we believed Couhaib would be fit again very quickly,” he said. “He had sustained a minor injury, and we felt he would be able to play matches again within a week-or certainly very soon. “It’s all very unfortunate. Couhaib travelled to Scotland on Tuesday and stayed there for three days. He made the trip with what we considered a minor injury. “They (Rangers) estimated a much longer period of unavailability than we did-six weeks, as I understand it. We, however, believe it will be considerably shorter.” Rangers looking for an excuse? He then believes that a combination of modern technology and Rangers looking for an issue has led to the current situation. “This was set to be a permanent transfer, and that wasn’t an option. You could almost call it a regular occurrence. In this case, I don’t want to call it a ‘failed’ medical, because that’s not what it is. “There is a dispute regarding his availability to play, and I see that happening far more frequently now than it used to. “Modern equipment reveals so much more than it used to, thanks to all the available data. But if you really want to find something? You’ll always find something. You’ll see *something* in any body that undergoes an MRI scan.” Meanwhile, Couhaib Driouech is forced to return to Eindhoven and deal with the consequences of Rangers’ decision. Stewart says the forward has been left disappointed by events. “Couhaib is deeply upset,” he concluded. “It’s a really unpleasant situation. He spent 48 hours in limbo. Everything was delayed by a day, and he was barely able to do anything. Now we’re getting back a disillusioned player. That’s not ideal. “The entire deal suddenly collapses over a period of four to six weeks where he’s deemed unavailable. Yet we’re talking about a contract spanning more than 200 weeks. It was a four-year deal.”
