Celtic are unlikely to have a deal for Gvidas Gineitis completed in time for Tuesday night’s Champions League registration deadline, CeltsAreHere understands.
Celtic remain interested in the 22-year-old, although they have yet to submit an official bid to the Serie A club.
Torino are understood to be looking for around £6million before agreeing to sell Gineitis, leaving Celtic with a decision to make over whether to push ahead with a formal offer.
There is competition for the Lithuanian international.
RB Salzburg have already seen an offer rejected after coming in below Torino’s valuation, while a proposal involving a player swap was also turned down by the Italian side.
That has left the door open for Celtic, but the timing makes it difficult to see Gineitis being registered for the LASK first leg unless talks move very quickly.
Celtic have therefore been discussing other midfield options as they prepare for life without Arne Engels.
William Clem has also been discussed as Celtic work through a wider list of potential midfield additions.
The difference in price could become important.
Gineitis remains a serious option, but with Torino holding out for around £6m and no official Celtic offer on the table yet, the Hoops may have to decide whether to wait for their preferred target or move more quickly for another player.
Tuesday’s deadline does not end Celtic’s interest in Gineitis, but it does make his chances of being involved against LASK increasingly slim.
With two late registration places still available, Celtic now have a short window to decide whether either will be used on a new arrival before Wednesday’s crucial European tie.
