Following their highly successful start to the DFB Youth League, VfL Wolfsburg’s U17s are set for their first home game of the new campaign this Sunday, 16 August. The Young Wolves welcome visitors from the Hanseatic city to the Porschestadion at 14:00, with FC St. Pauli providing the opposition.
Confidence boosted
While the Hamburg side began their campaign with a high-scoring 3-3 draw against Union Berlin, the same number of goals were distributed rather differently in the Green-and-Whites’ opening fixture. Head coach Christian Stegmaier’s side ran out 5-1 winners at Hertha BSC despite trailing 1-0 at half-time. “We’re realistic in our assessment of the result and there are certainly areas where we want to improve,” said Stegmaier of the match in the capital. “Nevertheless, after a long pre-season, that win was important for us because it confirms that we’re on the right track as a team.”
“Maintain and build on our home strength”
A brave, united display with plenty of presence and high intensity will now be the recipe for following up that victory against the Hamburg side. The head coach is preparing his team for opponents who, like Union before them, are likely to demand everything of the Young Wolves. “Judging by the chances, St. Pauli deserved all three points against Union. They’re an exciting team, extremely dangerous and very strong in transition. Above all, we’ll need to work together as a unit to keep their quick breaks under control,” warned Stegmaier. “I’m expecting a very intense and closely contested Youth League game in which we definitely want to maintain and build on the strong home form we showed last season with the U16s.”
