Huddersfield Town left 'devastated' by big injury blow ahead of League One start
HUDDERSFIELD Town have been hit by a ‘devastating’ blow ahead of the new League Two campaign with midfielder Marcus McGuane facing a lengthy spell out after rupturing his ACL.
The former Bristol City man, who has had an injury-hit time since joining last summer, suffered the injury in training on Wednesday.
Head coach Martin Drury, who takes charge of his first competitive league fixture as full-time boss against AFC Wimbledon at the Accu Stadium on Saturday afternoon, said: “Marcus suffered an injury on Wednesday in training.
"We’re devastated for him, because we know how hard he’s worked in the pre-season to get in.
"He's a really brilliant person, loves his football and is very, very dedicated towards his football, so to lose him in the way that we did in training is gutting.
"Not only for him, it's not good for the group as well, because he's a top player for this level.
"It was a tough day for the players. It was something really innocuous in training, where it really took place.
"We were able to see how much pain and agony he was in at the time. We have a duty to care now for Marcus and his road back to recovery.
“He’s ruptured his ACL, which is becoming more and more common in football, especially in elite football. It's something all over the place. It's the nature of the game, it's how fast the game has moved on now.”
Better news regarding the club’s midfield department saw Archie Collins add to their options in midweek, with Drury admitting that he had initially expected the former Peterborough United man to join a Championship club – where there was plenty of interest – after electing to run down his deal at London Road.
Drury added: “Obviously, seeing that he left Peterborough in the summer, I fully expected him to be playing Championship football this season, and I think that's what he's capable of.
"So, it’s really fortunate for us that, as time has gone by, it's become apparent that he'd become available.”
On the recruitment front, Drury is not ruling out for further incomings or outgoings.
Asked about any potential updates regarding Tom Iorpenda, on the wanted list of several clubs including Derby County, among others, the Town chief acknowledged that he is likely to leave at some point, but added that things have not yet moved.
“It’s the same as last week, no change,” he added:
"Tommy's obviously our player at this moment in time.
"There’s obviously interest in Tom from other clubs, as we spoke about last week. We have a duty of care to make sure that Tommy is fit and right, for if that happens, which it's not happened yet, but it looks like it's likely to happen.
"The last thing we want to do, from our point of view, from an asset perspective, is to make sure he doesn't lose his injury, and likewise for himself.
"He's trained brilliantly, he's done great around the training ground. The window closes and Tom's still with us, brilliant.
"We've got a great player in our hands, he's an asset. And if he's not here, then we wish him well and we'll make sure we get the right deal quickly.”
While Iorpenda won’t be involved this weekend, Ilias Bronkhorst, Bojan Radulovic and Murray Wallace are back in contention for the game with Wimbledon, with Herbie Kane and Cameron Ashia still out.
