The club confirmed in a statement this afternoon that the midfielder had suffered the setback in training on Wednesday, with Town getting their season underway at home to AFC Wimbledon tomorrow. The Terriers’ midfielder now faces his second lengthy spell on the sidelines since joining the club last summer, with the 27-year-old having also missed the first half of last term with a groin injury. “Following consultation with specialists, we can confirm that midfielder Marcus McGuane suffered an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament in training at Canalside this week,” a club statement read. “As a result, Marcus will require surgery that will unfortunately rule him out for an extended period, likely bringing a premature end to his 2026/27 Sky Bet League One season. It is anticipated that Marcus will make a full and complete recovery, and the club [will] support Marcus throughout his rehabilitation to ensure that is the case.” Discussing the setback, Town’s sporting director Chris Markham told his club’s website: “We’re gutted for Marcus. Losing him for an extended period on the eve of the new league season is clearly a big blow, and we’ll be doing everything in our power to support him throughout his comeback and recovery. “Marcus’ well-being is the most important thing in this situation and we will ensure he is looked after in the best possible way. Despite this being a long process, in the modern game there is nothing to suggest that he won’t be able to make a full recovery. Marcus is a strong character and a popular member of the dressing room, and we’ll remain positive around him to help get him back as quickly as possible.” At his pre-match press conference, head coach Martin Drury added: “Marcus suffered an injury in training on Wednesday. We are all devastated for him, because we have seen how hard he has worked in pre-season. “We now have a duty of care to look after Marcus, to make sure that he has the right support around him, and to make sure that he comes back in the best shape possible.”
