The News understands Mousinho is keen to add a full-back, central midfielder and flexible attacking option on top of the teenager’s capture before 11pm on September 1. The profile of attacker is a reflection of the potential loss of Thomas Waddingham for a lengthy period, after suffering an ankle injury at West Ham last weekend. The response to that development is something Mousinho is expecting to address, as the Eisners fly in for the Championship opener against QPR on Saturday. The Pompey boss has outlined how he now sees things, with 19 days of the window remaining. He told The News: ‘Everything we had was there at West Ham. ‘We’ve had Abs (Kamara) and Benji (Arthur) come in, so it’s two in and one out with Wadds. ‘So at the minute we’re okay, but with that situation we obviously need to keep strengthening. ‘It’s a good question (how many signings are needed). I would say three to four is an absolute push, but we do need a few more. ‘I still think there’s work to do. It’s maybe something I need to pick up this weekend (with the Eisners at the QPR game), but I certainly still think there’s work to do. ‘We actually have a big squad at the moment so we have to move some players on, but within that big squad we still had 18 fit outfield players last weekend. So there’s still definitely bits and bobs to do. ‘At the minute there will be no players leaving because we can’t afford to do it, but we’re going to have to move on some of them.’ An assessment of Pompey’s squad shows as many as six players will need to be moved on or deregistered to enable four more signings to arrive, who require a squad place. As contracted under-21 players the likes of Luke Brooke-Smith, Eoin Kenny, Thomas Waddingham and Franco Umeh don’t count towards the 25-man total. Madiodio Dia, Hayden Matthews and Adrian Segečić were all in that category last season, but now require a spot in the 25. There are a total of 27 players in that position, with four further additions taking that number to 31. Pompey could permanently sign an under-21 player to avoid filling a spot, though Mousinho has highlighted the cost associated with finding a young player ready to impact the Championship and dearth of options. Loan players under the age of 21 like Kavuma-McQueen required a squad space.
