Tommy Conway offers an update on his fitness after two surgeries for the Middlesbrough forward Tommy Conway had ankle surgery and then a hernia procedure this summer Tommy Conway is hoping to be back fit before the first international break of the season, but won’t rush his recovery after twice having surgery this summer. Conway had initially hoped to be back around the group roughly around this time, with the first game of the Championship season on Saturday against Lincoln City. That followed ankle surgery after the injury sustained in the play-offs which ended his World Cup dream. But, having played with a hernia towards the end of last season, Boro made the decision, along with the forward, to undergo a second surgery a few weeks back to correct that problem too. It meant slightly delaying Conway’s return to action, but will hopefully also mean that when he does return - hopefully some time before the first international break which comes in five weeks after Boro’s trip to Birmingham City - he is problem free. “I'm good,” said Conway when asked about his injury and recovery. “I had my ankle done obviously immediately, and the plan was always going to be if I'd gone to the World Cup, to assess my hernia after that because I was playing with that for a few months at the end of last season, but it was manageable. “And then it got to a point during my ankle rehab where we thought it was best to just get it done. So I got that done. It's a quick turnaround. “I'm not too far away, I'm back on the pitches so give it a few weeks - two, three, four weeks - I'm not going to rush myself, I'm going to make sure I'm back and ready to go. “Hopefully it won't be too long now. Getting over both of them, I've been under the knife twice in three months, obviously, so I'm just trying to get my body right and not rush and make sure when I'm back I stay back and I can help the team. I'm dying to be back.” Conway was speaking at Middlesbrough FC Foundation’s Utilita Football Festival 2026 at their new Southlands Sports & Community Hub. He said: “From when I first drove in I could see the kids outside playing.
