Liverpool youngster Calum Scanlon is now reportedly set to rejoin Cardiff City on loan, having impressed for the Welsh side in the second half of last season. The left-back moved to Cardiff midway through the 2025/26 campaign, having been on loan at Birmingham City before that, and he thrived at the former. Admittedly, injury problems limited Scanlon’s playing time overall, but he still helped the Bluebirds seal promotion from League One to the Championship, no doubt boosting his confidence. The 21-year-old has been back at Liverpool during pre-season, featuring in all three matches during the tour of the USA, but it feels inevitable that another loan switch is on the cards. According to Give Me Sport, Scanlon is now ” close to returning” to Cardiff for a second stint, as he looks to test himself in the Championship. It is claimed that “a deal is close to being agreed for him to return to Wales.” The perfect summer loan move for Calum Scanlon Scanlon is an impressive young player at Liverpool, and he has done well in plenty of his loan moves to date, being hailed by Alex Neil when he was in charge of him at Millwall: “I thought he was excellent. He’s athletic, he’s technical, he can handle the ball. The game, probably at the start, was a little bit quick for him, in terms of getting his head up and maybe feeding a couple down the side. But there is loads and loads to work with.” Realistically, thopugh, Scanlon’s first-team action at Liverpool will be extremely limited this season, with Milos Kerkez and Kostas Tsimikas both firmly ahead of him in the left-back pecking order. For that reason, heading out on loan again is a far better choice instead than going back into the Under-21s, and it may be that the Reds have a decision to make about his future next summer. A time will come when a permanent exit could be best for all parties, with Scanlon reaching a point in his career where he needs to settle down and become a first-choice left-back for a new club for several years.
