Sheffield Wednesday publicly announce plan to re-sign Jamie Vardy in League One – 24 years after releasing him
Sheffield Wednesday chairman David Storch has confirmed the club are lining up a spectacular move for Jamie Vardy.
The Owls, who came close to financial oblivion last season, are under strict budget rules after exiting administration with their new owner.
Vardy, now 39, is a free agent following his release from Cremonese and talkSPORT understands Championship club West Ham are considering a move.
But Wednesday chairman Storch revealed the club are actively exploring a way to bring Vardy to League One, where he would be in line for a reunion with old club Leicester.
“At some point, I’ll be able to tell a story,” Storch told the Weekend Breakfast Show when asked directly about the possibility of signing the former England star.
“This might not be the right time. But, yeah, Jamie is somebody that we would like to have in our club.
“Let’s just say he’d be somebody that we would be thrilled to have at the club.
“Unfortunately, we do have these restrictions. We’re trying to figure out how to get around the restrictions to put something in front of Jamie that would make sense for him.”
talkSPORT understands working within restrictions to make Vardy a compelling offer is viewed as extremely challenging.
Vardy has made no secret of his affection for Sheffield Wednesday – the club he grew up supporting.
After harbouring dreams of one day playing for the Owls, Vardy was brutally cut from the club’s academy as a teenager in 2002.
In a bid to resurrect his football career, the striker began an ascension through the lower leagues, impressing for Stocksbridge Park Steels and FC Halifax Town.
His superb goalscoring form earned him a move to League Two Fleetwood Town before Leicester City paid £1million for his services in May 2012.
Vardy went on to become a legend at the King Power Stadium, scoring 200 goals in 500 games for the Foxes.
He went on to famously win the Premier League title in 2016 before helping fire the Midlands club to FA Cup glory in 2021.
But a move to Hillsborough could provide the icing on the cake of what has been one of English football’s most respected career paths.
Sheffield Wednesday kick off their League One season at Leyton Orient on Saturday hoping to banish the horrors of last season's relegation.
Ahead of their season opener, Storch admits thats he feels a slight air of trepidation.
“I have a steely confidence that we're doing the right things,” he added.
“We're on the right path. However, I do feel like a high school kid about to go out and play in a major championship, I have the the butterflies in my stomach.
"I'm anxious to see how the how the lads perform. We're giving them all the resources they can to do as well as they can.”
