New West Brom captain confirmed as boss makes decision with defender
The club required a new permanent skipper after the departure of Jed Wallace last summer.
Albion have confirmed George Campbell as the new club captain.
Central defender Campbell, 25, has spent just 12 months at The Hawthorns but made a big impression in his first season and will lead out the side at Norwich for Saturday’s curtain-raiser and beyond.
He excelled under boss James Morrison in the spring when shifted to his natural centre-back role and became popular with supporters with 41 appearances in his debut campaign.
United States national Campbell replaced former winger Jed Wallace, Albion’s previous club captain of three years, who departed at the end of his contract earlier in the summer.

Former midfielder Alex Mowatt had been among the leading candidates to take over the armband and had done so during pre-season. He was also skipper in the EFL Cup at Rotherham last weekend but completed a move to Championship rivals Derby on Friday, just 24 hours before the new league season.
Campbell was told of the captaincy news on Friday morning and said: “It really is an absolute honour to be named club captain at this special football club.
“I understand the privilege and great responsibility that comes with wearing the armband, especially at a club that has had so many iconic skippers over the years.
“I’m excited to be leading a top group of players and working under the gaffer this season. We’ve had a strong summer and everyone is buzzing for the season to start.
“The supporters have taken me in and been amazing since I joined, and I’m determined to help make this an enjoyable year for them.
“I can’t wait to lead the boys out at Norwich this weekend.”
Morrison is also confident in the likes of Nat Phillips, Jayson Molumby and even new recruit Felix Horn Myhre he has players with leadership qualities throughout the squad.
In an exclusive interview with the Express & Star at the beginning of the month, Campbell was asked about the potential of becoming new Baggies skipper, having worn the armband in a friendly victory in Peterborough.
