Wigan Athletic are set to move on midfielder Babajide Adeeko this summer, with Rochdale striking a deal to sign the 23-year-old.
The former Ireland youth international has been on the periphery of the Latics squad in recent years, and was allowed to train with fellow Greater Manchester side Oldham Athletic earlier in the summer after being put up for sale.
Spotland Deal Made
Speaking about his future after returning from his temporary spell at Boundary Park, Gary Caldwell stated to Wigan Today:
“I spoke to Baba at the end of last season. I’ve spoken to him since he came back into the club. I spoke to other players at the club, everyone knows the situation and kind of what’s ahead of them.
“Baba had a period where he went to Oldham, and that wasn’t for him, which is great, he comes back to us, and we will look after him because he is one of our own, and anyone who is contracted with this club, we will do our best to look after them in the best way we possibly can.
“But they’re also very clear on what we think and where we see their careers moving forward, and that’s probably away from the football club.”
Now, according to Football Insider transfer expert Pete O’Rourke, Adeeko has now found a new destination in the form of League Two newcomers Rochdale, with an agreement reached between the two sides.
Having played just seven times in League One last season for the Latics, he has been knocked further down the pecking order in midfield following the arrival of new club captain Max Power, combined with an impending deal for Chelsea starlet Reggie Walsh.
He is now poised to leave the club with just one year left on his deal in order to link up with Ian Watson’s side as they gear up for their first League Two game against Newport County.
Adeeko Faces Uncertain Future
Having been told he is likely to be moved on this summer, combined with further incomings in midfield for Wigan Athletic, Baba Adeeko is now finally on his way out to try and forge his career elsewhere.
Having made a limited impact with Jenson Weir and, up until June, Matt Smith being very reliable regulars for the Latics, the 23-year-old was never likely to break through in Gary Caldwell’s plans, and now will have a chance to do so at Rochdale.
With the Spotland club still seeking quality reinforcements as they look to establish themselves in League Two, he heads there filling that quota, but his place under Ian Watson is far from assured.
Ed Francis, Ryan East, Harvey Gilmour and Casey Pettit are all good enough to play regularly, and adding a fifth option may mean opportunities are once again limited, especially if Dale continue with their 4-2-3-1 setup they deployed against Bradford City.
