Wigan Athletic chief issues transfer update with ins and outs imminent - 'Potentially got something' Gary Caldwell is hopeful of bolstering his Wigan Athletic squad in the lead-up to Saturday's League One opener at Cambridge United. Chelsea wonderkid Reggie Walsh is understood to be arriving on a season-long loan - and Latics are also believed to be close to a couple of other deals to add quality and quantity to the group. "We're still very active, and will be right up to the end of the window," said the Latics chief. "I'm constantly trying to improve the squad and increase competition for places. "To do that, we need to keep building and keep bringing players into the squad, and that's what we're determined to do." Caldwell also provided an update on trialists Scott Hogan and Tom McIntyre, who have been training with the club and playing in some of the pre-season friendlies in an attempt to win contracts. "Scott Hogan is still with the group, he is still training with us," said Caldwell. "We'll continue to look at what he can offer in the coming days. "Tom McIntyre, we've kind of said he can go and have a look at other options that are out there for him. At the moment, we're not looking at anyone else potentially coming in on trial. "That's not to say if something came up, I would never say it was something we couldn't do. We'll judge everything on a case by case basis. Hogan and McIntyre both featured in a behind-closed doors bounce game at Wrexham on Monday afternoon, which Caldwell says was beneficial - both on and off the pitch. "It was a very worthwhile exercise...at an amazing football club, with amazing facilities, that has had a huge rise in recent years," he said. "It happened through David Jones, an old Wigan colleague of mine...the opportunity came up, they went very strong, while we had a mix of first team and younger players, and a couple of trialists. "All in all it was a positive game for everyone...there were no Hollywood A-listers or TV cameras there...but both clubs got a lot out of it" With a smile, he added: "I have to say the food they put on was absolutely sensational. "There were steak ciabattas, chicken burgers...I didn't touch any of the brownies, but I believe Welshie (John Welsh, new first-team coach) had about 10...it was a top spread. "We were all joking afterwards that this is the benchmark we have to get this club back up to." On a serious note, Caldwell expects more departures from the group before the deadline, with midfielders Ronan Darcy, Baba Adeeko and Tobias Brenan most likely to leave. "There's nothing fresh to report on Ronan at the moment," revealed Caldwell. "Baba, there's potentially something there, that he's pursuing at the moment, and we'll see how that develops. "Tobias has also potentially got something, so we'll see how that develops as well. So there's still going to be outs from the club, as well as the ins that we'll continue to push for between now and the transfer deadline."
