Wigan Athletic are set to be handed a massive windfall from former player Joe Gelhardt’s impending transfer from Leeds United to Hull City. The Tigers are set to sign the attacker on a permanent basis from the Elland Road club following his successful loan spell last season, scoring 15 goals to help the East Yorkshire side gain promotion back into the Premier League after a decade. Latics Poised For Injection With a move now set to happen after the Athletic revealed that a £6.5 million deal had been agreed to send Gelhardt back to Hull, it has now activated a clause in the deal, which saw the former England youth international leave Wigan. Alan Nixon has revealed through his Patreon page that a 20% sell-on clause was included in the deal that saw him join Leeds back in 2020, which will net the League One club nearly £1 million as a result of his latest move. Emerging through the academy system at the Latics, Gelhardt was poised to break through as a regular in their squad following 19 appearances in the Championship, but was sold to the Whites in a deal which cost them a starting £900,000 with an additional £400,000 in add-ons. The 24-year-old never truly took off while at Elland Road, featuring just 58 times in total across six seasons, and ended up on loan three times, initially at Sunderland before heading to Hull for his first spell in January of 2025. Gelhardt is one of many recruits that Hull are eyeing this summer as they look to get their squad up to scratch for the Premier League, and are also set to recruit RB Salzburg’s Lucas Gourna-Douath in the coming days. Having also received a handsome fee for Sam Tickle following his move to Bristol City, Gary Caldwell and his side will have plenty to throw at their squad if desired to put them back into promotion conversations, but as it stands, they may not be investing much in this window at least. With a loan move for Reggie Walsh close to completion and a potential further move for Fulham’s Luke Harris being eyed, it seems that the Latics are content exploring the loan market before the season starts.
