Hanwell Town 2–1 Basingstoke Town Southern League Premier South | Tuesday 11 August 2026 Joe O’Loughlin’s second goal in a ‘Stoke shirt and his first of the season brought Basingstoke Town level at Hanwell Town, but Harvey Bradbury’s second-half winner left ‘Stoke without reward from an improved performance in West London. Dan Brownlie made three changes following Saturday’s opening-day defeat to Evesham United, bringing Casey Bocarro, Jedd Brown and Miles Obodo into the starting XI. The manager had called for greater pace and directness and Basingstoke showed both from the outset. Obodo almost provided the ideal opening in the early exchanges. Released into space by Tom Blake, the forward drove down the left, cut onto his right foot and saw a deflected effort pushed away by Hanwell goalkeeper Sam Beasant. The hosts responded through Bradbury, whose header drifted wide, but Basingstoke continued to threaten with Obodo, Jeremiah Okine-Peters and Brown looking to attack the spaces around the Hanwell defence. It was Hanwell, though, who struck first. Okine-Peters tracked Zak Joseph into the Basingstoke area and challenged as the Hanwell player went down. Referee Chad Greatorex pointed to the spot and Bradbury drove the resulting penalty beyond Simon Grant. Basingstoke reacted positively. Obodo dragged an effort wide before Brown was denied by Beasant following a quick counter-attack. Okine-Peters then sent a dangerous low ball across the six-yard box which narrowly escaped the arriving Basingstoke players. The pressure eventually told. O’Loughlin levels before the break With four minutes of the first half remaining, ‘Stoke kept a corner alive through Brown, Okine-Peters and James Henry. Brown returned the ball across the six-yard box and O’Loughlin arrived to convert from close range for his first goal of the campaign. It was deserved reward for a strong response to falling behind and sent the sides into half-time level at 1–1. Hanwell regain the lead The hosts started the second period with greater intensity. Bradbury went close at the far post, steering an effort wide, before Hanwell restored their advantage on 59 minutes. Dwayne Duncan advanced from defence and delivered into the Basingstoke area. Bradbury directed the ball goalwards and Grant got fingertips to it as it struck the crossbar and dropped around the goal line. Joseph followed in, but the goal was awarded to Bradbury for his second of the evening. Hanwell enjoyed their strongest spell after going ahead. Billy Upton made several important interventions, while Bernie Tanner recovered well to deny Bradbury an opportunity to complete his hat-trick. Brownlie responded with a four-player change, introducing Aleks Kokoszka, D’Andre Brown, Joe Lewis-Evans and Christos Papakonstantinou, the latter making his Basingstoke Town debut. Late chances The changes helped Basingstoke build momentum again late on. Papakonstantinou came close to an equaliser after combining with Finn Evans, cutting onto his left foot before seeing a deflected effort pass narrowly wide. Okine-Peters then created another opening from distance, his strike clipping the top of the crossbar with Beasant beaten. Hanwell managed the closing stages effectively, preventing ‘Stoke from creating one final clear opportunity and securing a 2–1 victory. Despite the result, there were encouraging signs in Basingstoke’s response to the opening-day defeat, particularly in the first-half reaction to falling behind and the pressure applied during the closing stages. The next step is turning those positive periods into points.
