West Brom new boy nets fifth goal of pre-season as injury comeback duo play 45 minutes The Baggies finished their pre-season campaign with a behind-closed-doors fixture against Coventry at The Hawthorns. Jimmy-Jay Morgan scored his fifth goal of an exciting pre-season as Albion recorded a 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns against Premier League new boys Coventry City. The behind-closed-doors clash saw James Morrison’s side sign off for pre-season against the Sky Blues as injury recovery duo Mikey Johnston and Tammer Bany both played the second 45 minutes. Morgan was once again on target for Albion with an equaliser to cancel out Coventry’s opener from Loum Tchaouna after 26 minutes. The recruit from Chelsea skipped into the Coventry penalty box and slid a cool finish under Ben Wilson four minutes before the interval. He added to goals against Sheffield Wednesday, Bromley and Shrewsbury. Boss Morrison was keen for a stern challenge against a higher-league opposition to round off pre-season after facing lower league sides. There was nothing to separate the teams in the second period at an empty Hawthorns, though both sides struck the woodwork. Albion were fractions from a winner through attacking midfielder Bany, playing his first minutes of pre-season since a hamstring injury on the final day of last season. The Jordan international struck the crossbar after an Isaac Price effort flew wide for the Baggies. Frank Lampard’s men went closest late on as former Albion frontman Brandon Thomas-Asante, on as a substitute, cannoned the post. Morrison was also able to introduce attacker Johnston at half-time. The Republic of Ireland international has stepped up his minutes since February’s broken ankle with appearances against Notts County, Peterborough and now Coventry. There was another start for new right-back recruit Nolan Galves as well as youngster Harry Whitwell. Towering teenage midfielder Matty Crowther, 18, continued his eye-catching pre-season by being introduced at half-time. Defender Chris Mepham was the only home player to complete 90 minutes as Nat Phillips and George Campbell remained unused substitutes. The warm-up fixture also acted as a test event for The Hawthorns and notably the stadium’s new PA system, to receive the sign-off to be ready in time for the home opener against Burnley on August 23. Albion begin their season with an EFL Cup first round tie at Rotherham on Saturday evening at 5.30pm.
