Merthyr Town have unveiled a stunning new Atalanta anniversary shirt, celebrating one of the greatest nights in the club’s history – the famous 2-1 victory over Italian giants Atalanta at Penydarren Park in 1987. Nearly 40 years on from that memorable European encounter, the Martyrs have revisited the occasion with a special retro-inspired long-sleeved shirt created in collaboration with Weekend Offender. And for supporters who remember that remarkable European run, this one is packed with nostalgia. Remembering Merthyr Town 2-1 Atalanta The inspiration behind the shirt comes from an extraordinary chapter in Merthyr’s history. In 1987, Merthyr faced Atalanta in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, welcoming the Italian side to Penydarren Park for a night that would become part of Welsh football folklore. Against opponents from one of Europe’s great footballing nations, Merthyr famously defeated Atalanta 2-1 at Penydarren Park.
