I say that because, as things stand now, Juventus’ rumored move for the Paris Saint-Germain-bound Zion Suzuki looks less and less likely to actually happen. That is according to multiple reports out of Italy on Thursday, with things likely being a rather fluid situation even as I type this sentence out. As IlBianconero’s Romeo Agresti put it in a post to social media, “Today has brought a slowdown on the Suzuki front. We’ll see in the coming hours if it’s definitive.” He then went on to say that Juventus have “resumed evaluating other profiles” — which pretty much tells you all you need to know about the club’s confidence when it comes to securing Suzuki on loan for the 2026-27 season. Instead, yet another pivot looks about as likely as ever to happen now as we sit here 10 days before Juventus kick things off against Frosinone on Aug. 23. That pivot, as you might expect, looks to be Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario — although Spurs are reportedly looking for a potential sale rather than a loan move, according to Gazzetta dello Sport’s Giovanni Albanese. Suzuki’s current club Parma and his soon-to-be next club Paris Saint-Germain agreed to a €35 million deal earlier this week, according to reports. The thinking was that PSG would then loan him to Juventus even though they had just been in competition to sign the same player in Suzuki, who is coming off a strong season with Parma and then with Japan at the World Cup. However, a big part in it was also dependent on Lucas Chevalier, the goalkeeper that PSG spent big on last season actually staying at the club or leaving during the final weeks of the summer transfer window. Does this development mean that PSG know that they’re going to be able to offload Chevalier soon, which in turn means they actually need Suzuki to stick around rather than move to Juventus? Maybe. It’s hard to believe this deal that looked like it was going to happen would suddenly hit the skids unless something like that happened. Suzuki had also previously given the all-clear to a loan move to Juventus, according to Tuttosport. (Who also said this loan move was a done deal, by the way, but that’s another matter for another day.) Vicario has been the name in the background for the entire summer. When Juve were linked with Alisson Becker, it was Vicario there as a backup option. Same goes for when Juve were chasing Emi Martinez for much of the summer. Even as they tried to sign Suzuki outright and then on loan after the PSG deal looked likely, Vicario was looked at as the backup option. Maybe now he will become the main option. Or maybe he’s just a smokescreen for somebody else to come in ahead of the season starting.
