Wigan Athletic boss offers injury updates on Jon Mellish, Chris Sze, Ryan Trevitt and Akeel Higgins Gary Caldwell has delivered the latest injury news from within the Wigan Athletic camp following their final pre-season friendly at Grimsby Town Wigan Athletic boss Gary Caldwell has provided injury updates on a number of his players following the conclusion of their pre-season schedule. Latics rounded off their pre-season programme at the weekend, with a young side being held to a goalless draw at Southport on Friday evening, while a more senior outfit was defeated 2-0 at Grimsby Town on Saturday afternoon. Chris Sze was forced off in the first half at Blundell Park with an unusual injury, while Jon Mellish will require further assessment after leaving the action in the second half with what looked like a lower leg injury. Providing an update on the pair post-match, Caldwell said: “Chris will be okay. “I think he had a bite, I want to call it, and it was like it was puffing up his leg, and he was just struggling to run because of the inflammation, so that, you know, isn't an injury as such, and he should hopefully be okay. “Mell is probably a bit more worrying, and we need to assess just how that is and see how it settles down, but fingers crossed, they're both okay.” There was less encouraging news on Ryan Trevitt and Akeel Higgins, with both remaining unavailable as they continue their recoveries. Trevitt, who has joined Wigan on a permanent two-year deal after leaving Premier League side Brentford, is still tackling his rehabilitation from the injury he suffered while on loan with Latics last season, while summer recruit Higgins did not feature at Southport or Grimsby due to a minor groin injury. “Ryan's a number of weeks away," said Caldwell. "He’s working extremely hard with physios. He's not even in full training with the group yet. “He started passing drills this week and getting involved in the group, but he will still be a number of weeks away before he's considered for selection. I don’t know what day it was, but he will probably be out for a week to 10 days, so he is working with the physios, should hopefully be doing some straight line running next week, and he shouldn’t be too long.” Latics begin their competitive campaign on Saturday with a trip to fellow League One side Barnsley in the Carabao Cup first round.
