Winger reveals reasons for leaving Wigan Athletic for Swindon Town Joseph Hungbo completed his season-long loan move from Wigan Athletic to League Two Swindon Town - then declared it was 'something I personally needed to do for me'. The 26-year-old winger, who joined Latics in January 2025 from Bundesliga 2 side FC Nurnberg, was made available for transfer at the end of last season by Gary Caldwell. And he will spend the forthcoming campaign in the division below after agreeing to join Ian Holloway's outfit. “After speaking to the gaffer and understanding how he wants me to play, I feel it will definitely bring out my best attributes," said Hungbo, who failed to score in 50 appearances for Latics. "I feel it was something I personally needed to do for me, and I feel it can help reignite the things that I know I can do. "For me, it's a great stepping stone to what I want to do and what I want to accomplish while I'm here. "I understand it’s a new challenge, a different challenge, but I’m going to take that day by day, and hopefully the results can follow too.” After coming through the ranks at Watford, Hungbo has spent time at Aldershot, Ross County, Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United. And he can't hide his desire to put down some roots and find his best form on a more consistent basis. "I feel like I've had good spells, but I definitely feel I could have done a lot more in certain aspects of my game," he said. "This is a new opportunity for me to show people what I can do, and prove to myself what I'm about. "I feel like this is the perfect platform to enable me to do that. People come to football to be entertained, and hopefully that will be what happens. "I've worked hard in pre-season (at Wigan), I've got a lot of work in, so I'm raring to get going on the field now." The 21-year-old spent last term with the ‘other’ Latics, scoring twice in 25 appearances. He also spent a month at Oldham in the first half of the 2024/25 campaign, before injury curtailed his stay at Boundary Park.
