Wigan Athletic winger makes permanent switch to Rochdale Jonny Smith's time with Wigan Athletic is over after the winger joined League Two outfit Rochdale on a two-year contract. The 29-year-old, who joined Latics from Burton Albion three years ago, was made available for transfer by Gary Caldwell at the end of last season. Smith spent last term on loan at Gillingham, but returned to Wigan after sustaining a season-ending injury in January. And he has added motivation to return to full fitness after moving to fresh surroundings with the fourth tier new-boys. “I’m so excited," he said. "I’m ready to carry on the momentum the club has had over the last couple of years. “There’s a real feel-good factor around the place, and I wanted to be part of it. "I can’t wait to get going - the manager contacted me a couple of weeks ago, and it went from there. "He showed his interest, and we spoke about how he wanted to play, which sounds exciting." On his current fitness status, he added: "I just need to keep building up my fitness, and hopefully that sharpness will soon come back. "I've been playing in League One for the past few years, apart from the loan spell I had at Gillingham last season. "I'm 29 now, so hopefully I bring a little bit of experience as well which can help the group." Rochdale head coach Ian Watson could not hide his delight at unveiling his newest signing. "He’s going to bring us a lot of quality from the wide areas and he has experienced a lot of league games. "He will be good culturally for the group – he’s a winner. We’re excited to have him in the building.” Smith scored 10 times in 77 appearances during his time with Latics. His trademark move was cutting in off the right-hand side and unleashing a rocket shot with his left foot, with Premier League Fulham one of the victims of that in the 2024/25 FA Cup.
