Leeds United hopeful they can recruit Borussia Mönchengladbach and Switzerland defender Nico Elvedi
An update on Leeds United’s transfer activity as an international defender is targeted
Leeds United are hopeful of adding Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi to their list of summer recruits.
The 29-year-old has been on the books of Mönchengladbach since 2015, when he was signed from FC Zurich in his native Switzerland.
He has since amassed 364 appearances for the Bundesliga club. establishing himself among the division’s most dependable centre-backs.
A 73-cap Switzerland international, Elvedi played under Daniel Farke during the Leeds manager’s reign at Borussia-Park. He is also familiar with Whites winger Noah Okafor having played with him at international level.
Elvedi was linked with Leeds earlier in the summer, only for talk of interest from Elland Road to quieten.
Leeds United working on Nico Elvedi deal
However, The Yorkshire Post understands Leeds are now working on a deal to end the defender’s lengthy association with Mönchengladbach.
The Whites are hopeful of getting a move finalised and adding some much-needed depth to the centre-back department, with Sebastiaan Bornauw edging towards the exit door.
Bornauw only arrived at Elland Road from Wolfsburg last summer, but is seemingly close to joining Hamburg after finding opportunities limited in England.
Leeds United’s centre-back pool
Leeds appear set to stick with a central back three for the campaign ahead, which only heightens the importance of depth.
Elvedi would be challenging Joe Rodon, Jaka Bijol and Tarik Muharemović for minutes in the heart of defence, while Farke can also call upon James Justin and Ethan Ampadu as cover.
Rodon has been a mainstay for Leeds in recent years, while Bijol enjoyed a promising maiden campaign following his switch from Udinese last summer.
Muharemović was lured from Sassuolo for a reported £34m last month and looks likely to make his debut in the season opener away at Nottingham Forest on August 22.
