Wigan Athletic boss Gary Caldwell provides latest on Baba Adeeko future after Oldham spell
Wigan Athletic midfielder Baba Adeeko has recently returned to the club after spending time training with Oldham Athletic
Wigan Athletic boss Gary Caldwell has provided the latest regarding the future of Baba Adeeko following the midfielder’s recent spell training with Oldham Athletic.
The 23-year-old academy graduate was one of five players whom Caldwell made available for transfer at the end of last season, and he recently spent time training with League Two side Oldham.
However, that move did not materialise, with Adeeko returning to Wigan and making a substitute appearance in last Saturday’s 3-0 pre-season victory over AFC Fylde at Mill Farm.
Providing an update on the former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international’s future, Caldwell reiterated the club’s position while insisting Adeeko will continue to be involved and supported by Latics while he is at the club.
“Baba’s available,” Caldwell said when asked for the latest regarding Adeeko’s future following his return from Oldham. “I spoke to Baba at the end of last season. I’ve spoken to him since he came back into the club. I spoke to other players at the club, everyone knows the situation and kind of what’s ahead of them.
“Baba had a period where he went to Oldham, and that wasn’t for him, which is great, he comes back to us, and we will look after him because he is one of our own, and anyone who is contracted with this club, we will do our best to look after them in the best way we possibly can.
“But they’re also very clear on what we think and where we see their careers moving forward, and that’s probably away from the football club.
“But whilst he is here, he will get minutes, he’ll train with us, and we’ll keep him ready for a club, should they want to come and get him.”
Adeeko, who is contracted to Latics until the summer of 2027, has been limited in time on the field over the last 12 months due to injury. His last competitive appearance came in a 2-0 home defeat to Cardiff City last September before injuries disrupted the remainder of his campaign.
Having joined Wigan at the age of 13, Adeeko has gone on to make more than 100 appearances since his first-team debut in 2021.
Latics round off their pre-season schedule this weekend with trips to Southport and Grimsby on Friday and Saturday respectively.
