Bayern Munich chief Max Eberl has cast serious doubt over Joao Palhinha’s move to Aston Villa.
The Portuguese midfielder has been a target for Villa as cover for the injured Amadou Onana, but only on a loan basis.
Bayern, however, want to sell Palhinha this summer, and if a loan agreement for next season were to be reached, there would also need to be an obligation to sign him.
“I had read that Aston Villa contacted us about Joao, and that's correct,” Eberl said. “But we won't reach an agreement with Aston Villa.
“It simply won't work, because we're not in a position where we have to do everything that others demand of us.
“There's an overall situation; there are three parties that have to come to an agreement.”
It has been claimed by Marca that Newcastle United have offered Palhinha a three-year contract.
Meanwhile, Villa are expected to complete the signing of left-back Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid.
Unai Emery’s side will complete their pre-season preparations on Saturday against Borussia Mönchengladbach in Germany.
Aston Villa will face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup final on Wednesday, August 12, as the Europa League and Champions League winners meet in Austria. Fans can watch the game live on TNT Sports via HBO Max or Prime Video's HBO Max channel.
