Aurele Amenda partnered Bobby Thomas in central defence and Brandon Thomas-Asante and Tchaouna flanked Simms in attack. Simms showed up well even before his 12th minute opener, stealing the ball in the Monaco area and squaring for Yirenkyi who hammered his shot straight at Lukas Hradecky. The goalkeeper was left completely exposed for the opener though, with Simms latching on to a slide-rule pass from Grimes. The forward bore down on goal and picked out the bottom corner. City doubled their lead just after the half-hour when they picked Monaco apart, with Yirenkyi freeing Tchaouna on the right of the area. The winger took a touch and lashed a low shot into the net. Monaco had the odd opening up the other end, with Carl Rushworth saving well from an angled drive from Mika Biereth early on but as the half ended City sat on their two-goal lead. The visitors should have pulled a goal back seven minutes after the restart when Stanis Idumbo was sent clear on a counter-attack. As he closed in on goal the forward lashed over the bar. Distribution good on a comfortable night. Van Ewijk 7 A superb, last-ditch sliding tackle atoned for allowing his winger to run inside him. Overall a solid performance. He should do OK in the Premier League. Thomas 6.5 Dominant in the air and studious in his defending on the ground. A really good display from the centre back. Amenda 7 There were times when he oozed class when he carried the ball forward or ran it away from attackers. Looked a threat at attacking set-pieces too. Dasilva 6 Picked out Thomas-Asante with a low cross early on. Wasn't perfect on the ball but wasn't bad either. Grimes 6.5 A trademark assist with a slicing pass that freed Simms. Tidied things up, instigated attacks, you know the picture. Onyeka 6.5 Battled well in the middle, won tackles, closed well and had some enterprising moments in possession. Yirenkyi 8* Perfectly weighted ball put Tchaouna in on the right to make it 2-0. This was a tremendous debut, one that is simply mouth-watering. Strong, fast and intelligent. Tchaouna 7 Clinical finish for 2-0, might have had a second goal after Grimes' corner was cleared to him in the D but the shot flew wide. A promising evening for the winger. Thomas-Asante 6 Bustled up and down the left, couldn't quite find the end product when it mattered but overall a good night's work. Simms 6.5 Opened the scoring with real composure when sent free by Grimes. Held the ball up reasonably well and won a couple of high turnovers. Not bad.
