The 26/27 Championship season started last night as Wolves hosted Blackburn Rovers. Wolverhampton Wanderers, one of the favourites for the title, were bailed out thanks to a last-minute controversial Raul Jimenez penalty in a 2-2 draw with Rovers. Marshall Munetsi, expected to be one of the best players in the Championship this season, gave Wolves the lead after being set up by Fer Lopez. McLoghlin and Gudjonsen then turned it around for Blackburn at Molineux Stadium, with Gudjonsen’s goal coming from former Hammer Oladapo Afolayan. In the last minute of the match, Wolves were handed a penalty due to a handball by Blackburn’s Ryan Alebiosu, who was actually linked with West Ham earlier in the window. Raul Jimenez put the penalty in the back of the net after a stuttering run-up that really shouldn’t be allowed. The Mexican striker saved Wolves’ blushes, but a draw at home on the opening day against a side that finished 20th in the League last season really isn’t good. This is a brilliant opportunity for the Hammers now. A win away at another one of the favourites for the League after Wolves drew with one of the favourites for relegation would really set an early precedent and send a message to the rest of the League. A trip to Turf Moor this early on is going to be very difficult. Other than Wolves away, Millwall away, and maybe Middlesbrough away. Burnley away was probably the next most difficult one. It’s going to be tricky, but we’re the favourites. We need to show the rest of the le ague we’re not here to stay on Sunday, we need a fast start, and an all round brilliant performance to start the season.
