The Nigerian forward has put pen to paper on a contract with the Süper Lig side, bringing his two-year spell on Wearside to an end without making a senior competitive appearance for the Black Cats. Abdullahi joined Sunderland from Belgian club Gent in August 2024, signing a four-year contract after impressing at youth level in Belgium. The 22-year-old scored 21 goals in 38 league appearances for Jong Gent and also made two senior appearances for the club before moving to the Stadium of Light. However, a succession of injury problems disrupted Abdullahi’s development following his arrival at Sunderland and prevented him from forcing his way into Régis Le Bris’ first-team plans. He trained with the senior squad at different stages but was unable to make his competitive debut. Abdullahi was not part of the first-team group for Sunderland’s pre-season victory at York City last month, instead featuring for the under-21s against South Shields. Talks with Eyüpspor subsequently progressed and the striker will now look to secure regular senior football in Turkey. Abdullahi previously spent time on trial with Marseille and Borussia Dortmund before choosing to join Gent. He has also represented Nigeria at under-20 level, featuring at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and scoring twice in seven appearances for his country. Confirming his departure, Sunderland said: “Everyone at Sunderland wishes Ahmed all the best as he continues his career in Turkey.”
