Oliver Glasner is hopeful Chris Wood will be available to face Brest at the City Ground on Sunday.
The talismanic striker has featured just once for Nottingham Forest in pre-season, having been given time off after New Zealand’s World Cup campaign.
It was thought he might play against Udinese at the weekend but he was withdrawn before kick-off – and missed last night’s 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen.
In his absence goals from Dan Ndoye and Arnaud Kalimuendo ensured Glasner won his first match in charge at the City Ground – but far more important tests await.
Which is why the Austrian admits he is being cautious with his centre forward as he builds to the first Premier League fixture against Leeds United.
Wood looks set to get a few more minutes under his belt before then: “We don't take any risks after a really difficult last season,” Glasner said.
“It was a very long injury and he had a very minor muscle injury, but he trained already today, so it was more or less precaution.
“Let's see if he can do the sessions on Friday and Saturday without any issues and [then] he will play on Sunday.
“But Chris Wood is so experienced, so I don't need to tell him how the Premier League works, he knows that it's just to keep him fit and that's why we didn't take any risk.”
Igor Jesus played up front in the first half, while Taiwo Awoniyi played the second 45 against the Bundesliga outfit.
