The news is a big blow for boss Unai Emery, just over a week before Villa begin their Premier League season at Brighton. Both players would have been likely to start the match but Emery will now be forced into a rethink. Villa already have several injury problems before the league season has even begun. Gomes was signed last month from Wolves after Amadou Onana suffered a knee injury during the World Cup which is likely to keep him out for most of the campaign. Record signing Johan Manzambi is also expected to miss the start of the season, also with a knee issue picked up during the tournament.
