Exeter City confirmed the double loan signing of Vincent Harper and Lakyle Samuel, from Walsall and Manchester City respectively. Both are wing-backs, Harper on the left and Samuel on the right, with the former capable of playing further forward and the latter able to cover in central defence. But what can both men bring to Exeter City? Let’s take a look… A Familiar Face Harper has only had a year away from St James Park, having previously spent two seasons at the club before being released at the end of the 24/25 season. The wing-back joined Walsall on a two-year contract, and played 37 times for the Saddlers, but is clearly not in the plans of new manager Lee Grant. Having made 65 appearances for the Grecians, fans are familiar with Harper’s game, with his pace and forward threat adding something to this current City team. The Kenyan was well-liked in Devon, and now returns to the club with an opportunity to be a regular starter in red and white. Dynamic Upgrade Harper was never truly able to establish himself as City’s first choice left-wing-back, with injuries and Gary Caldwell’s preference for Ilmari Niskanen or Jack McMillan on that side seeing his minutes limited. If he can stay fit, then he does represent a clear upgrade on Gwion Edwards, whose abilities may be of better use further forward. He would have to compete with Ethan Sutherland, who despite getting off on the wrong foot with City fans, could grow into a solid option on the left-hand side. Harper is a slight defensive liability, but his attacking output could be worth it’s wait in gold, especially in an Exeter team that looks incredibly one-note going forward. Much-Needed Cover The Grecians needed cover in both right-wing-back and centre back, and Samuel can do both, which could prove important for Matt Taylor. The Englishman is predominantly a wing-back, but one with a more defensive edge, especially when compared to his competition in Andrew Oluwabori. This could mean that he is favoured on the right when Harper is selected, allowing more freedom on the left-side, but seeing less minutes in games that City want to really attack. His ability to play at the back could be vital as well, with there not being much cover for Ed James, who will be having his first full season as a starting defender. Time To Shine Samuel was a part of Andy Woodman’s League Two winning Bromley side, but only managed seven appearances throughout the campaign. This second loan to the fourth tier will be seen as a real opportunity for the Manchester City player to go out and get some minutes, having spent 25/26 largely on the sidelines. The defender is a product of the Citizens academy, which usually comes with a degree of technical ability, so he will fit into the current City back three, and perhaps be more confident on the ball. If the Grecians switch to a back four, Samuel becomes far and away the first choice right-back, but as it stands Samuel will be an important component off the bench.
