Going forward, it’s been a tricky pre-season for the Reds, with defender Ibrahim Konate’s exit and Joe Gomez’s injury leaving Liverpool light at the back. They’ve conceded seven goals across their last two pre-season matches which, while such fixtures should never be taken too seriously, does suggest the club need to shore up their defence. The loan signing of Ronald Araujo from Barcelona was made to do just that, but there are still areas of the side that Iraola will be looking to strengthen. The club still haven’t replaced club icon Mohamed Salah, having missed out on top target Yan Diomande to Real Madrid. A right-back is also thought to be high on their wish list, with Connor Bradley likely to be out with injury until November. The major signings Liverpool could still make this summer: Gusto to Barcola Malo Gusto - Chelsea: The Reds’ aforementioned need for a new right-back could see them turn to the Blues defender, who is firmly behind club captain Reece James in the pecking order. The arrival of Marco Palestra from Atalanta could also see the Frenchman’s game time limited, as the Blues prepare for a new era under ex-Liverpool star Xabi Alonso. Liverpool are believed to have let their interest in Gusto be known to Chelsea, who are said to be demanding around £75m for the 16-cap France international. It’s not clear whether the Reds would be willing to pay such a hefty fee, or if they could be blown out of the water by Manchester City, with their new manager Enzo Maresca said to be keen on a reunion with one of his former players. Matias Fernandez-Pardo - Lille: A host of Premier League clubs are said to be interested in the Belgian winger, who lit up Ligue 1 last season as he netted eight goals and provided five assists. He’s capable of playing across the front line, and could be available for around £30m. As things stand, he may be heading to Atletico Madrid, but there’s still time for that to change. Bradley Barcola - PSG: It’s not been a great summer for transfer sagas, but Barcola to Liverpool is one that’s been bubbling away nicely. The Reds want to sign him, and the player supposedly wants to join. The issue? Paris Saint-Germain’s asking price, which is said to be a whopping £145m after seeing players of a similar stature go for similarly exorbitant fees during the current window. In what is surely a boost for the Reds, however, is news that PSG are closing in on signing Ferran Torres from Barcelona. This almost certainly means that Barcola will be allowed to leave - now it’s just a case of whether Liverpool can haggle down PSG to a more reasonable fee. That said, don’t rule out the possibility of a stunning transfer hijack from Arsenal. The major signings Liverpool could still make this summer: Minteh to Fort Yankuba Minteh - Brighton: If the Reds can’t get their hands on Barcola, they could make a move for Minteh instead. The Seagulls star has shown plenty of promise on the south coast, and could be available for a significantly lower price than the Reds’ top target. £70m could be enough to sign the Gambia international, which may well be tempting for Liverpool as they look to stretch their remaining transfer budget across more than one signing. Iliman Ndiaye - Everton: Not since Abel Xavier in 2002 has a player crossed the Merseyside divide - could Ndiaye end the 24-year standstill? He’s said to have recently turned down a big-money move to the Saudi Pro League in favour of remaining in the Premier League, but it’s unclear whether that will be with Everton or interested clubs such as Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United. One to watch, certainly. Hector Fort - Barcelona: Another decent right-back option, Fort has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League this summer. Everton are currently believed to be leading the race to sign the 20-year-old, who is capable of playing both as a right-back or a centre-back, but Liverpool are more than capable of changing that situation. Fort spent last season on loan at Elche, with first team football hard to come by at the Camp Nou.
