'Always happy' - Matthias Jaissle hints he will do something Eddie Howe was reluctant to at Newcastle United
Matthias Jaissle reacted to Newcastle United’s pre-season friendly defeat to Everton at Murrayfield.
Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle admitted there are issues to address in his squad, despite an ‘exciting’ start to the 3-1 defeat against Everton.
The Magpies controlled the opening exchanges at Murrayfield before Everton capitalised on a defensive error to take the lead through Thierno Barry. Iliman Ndiaye then made it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the first half. Tyrique George made it 3-0 to Everton in the second half before Harvey Barnes scored a late consolation for Newcastle.
Reflecting on his first taste of football as Newcastle head coach against Premier League opposition, Jaissle said: “The start was really good, exciting to see how the players can perform in the way we want to play.
“Unfortunately, then after the first goal we conceded, it was a setback also to see. This is something we need to address also, in all honesty. And then in the second half, we changed completely.
“Again, I think probably the youngest four-back you can bring on the pitch. But I'm always happy to see the young lads from the academy, giving them game time.
“And they're also doing good against physically strong opponents. This is something we can take out of that game. Also then the end, when we scored out of a good structure, out of a phase in possession, there are elements to see where we can build on.”
While Jaissle predecessor, Eddie Howe, often turned to youngsters from the academy in pre-season, he was reluctant to turn to them in competitive games. With the exception of Lewis Miley and Elliot Anderson, no other player graduated from Newcastle’s academy to make more than one competitive start during Howe’s tenure.
But Jaissle may be left with no other choice, particularly if progress is limited on the transfer front.
Four of Newcastle’s five summer signings so far are all below the age of 21 and will not take up a Premier League squad space.
And the departures of players such as Kieran Trippier, Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes leaves Jaissle with what he has described as a ‘vacuum’ in the squad for players, or potential new signings to step into.
Matthias Jaissle already looking ahead to Liverpool
Newcastle now look ahead to a double header of matches at St James’ Park this weekend against Strasbourg and Bayer Leverkusen. It will be the final two tests for Jaissle’s side before they open the Premier League season against Liverpool on August 23.
A big debate surrounding Newcastle is how prepared they will be for the upcoming campaign and the need for new additions.
“We don't have too many training sessions at the moment, as you know,” he added. “We have many, many matches now on the weekend again, two matches at home, which is really nice in front of our fans. And then Liverpool is already waiting.”
Newcastle will be hoping to make at least one new addition prior to the season opener, with Jaissle admitting he is well aware of what his squad needs but is not prepared to discuss it on the record.
“You all see the matches,” Jaissle continued. “You're also smart enough to see the needs in the squad. I will be always consistent with my approach. We handle these things internally. We are aware of what we need. There's still some time.
"Liverpool is already next week, so we use every day. That's the only thing we can control in the best possible way to make progress.
