Mansfield Town boss Nigel Clough makes Alfie May admission ahead of Doncaster Rovers clash The new League One season is just a couple of days away Doncaster Rovers kick off the new League One season this Saturday, with a short trip to Mansfield Town. Grant McCann's side are aiming to improve on last term's 14th-placed finish whilst the Stags finished in an impressive 10th spot. Ahead of the game, Mansfield chief Nigel Clough has been previewing the opening day fixture - and has revealed his side were one of the many teams desperately trying to sign Alfie May. After being made available for loan by parent club Huddersfield, it was Rovers who won the race to re-sign May as he sealed a hero's return to South Yorkshire. “Doncaster have brought in a very good striker in Alfie May," Clough said in the build-up to Saturday's fixture. "They lost Luke Molyneux but their replacement is a proven goal-scorer at this level and I think he’s one an awful lot of teams, including ourselves, enquired about. But his family and emotional ties to Doncaster meant he wasn’t going anywhere else." Clough added: "If you’re not on it and you make mistakes, Doncaster will punish you. I think it was a very good season for Doncaster. I know Grant quite fancied his chances in the league and thought they could more than survive and they will be looking to push on this year." Incidentally, Rovers chief Grant McCann and captain Owen Bailey will be conducting press duties on Thursday lunchtime as build-up to the new season continues. * Pick up our special, 8-page season supplement free inside this week's Doncaster Free Press which is on sale now.
