With the opening game just days away, the Sheffield Wednesday vault series looks back at one of Wednesday’s best opening games in recent memory. The Owls head to Leyton Orient to start their League One season on the back of a 1-0 win against Bolton Wanderers in the EFL Cup. If Henrik Pedersen can guide his side to a result similar to the one Danny Rohl achieved two years ago, he will go some way toward silencing those doubters. After pulling off a miracle survival the season before, there was optimism around Hillsborough as Plymouth arrived in Sheffield for the side’s Championship clash live on Sky. With all the eyes on Rohl’s side, Sheffield Wednesday impressed, running out 4–0 winners. Sheffield Wednesday Outclass Plymouth Rohl got the best of Wayne Rooney’s Argyle, sending the Owls briefly to the top of the Championship table. The goalscoring that day was opened by Wednesday’s goalscorer against Bolton, Jamal Lowe. Lowe scored after 35 minutes, sending a packed-out Hillsborough wild. The Owls continued to impress in the second half. However, it was a Plymouth player who scored Wednesday’s second goal. Brendan Galloway put the ball into his own net to make it 2-0 to Wednesday. In the 82nd minute, Josh Windass opened his account for the season. He made it 3-0 on Wednesday, assisted by talented winger Anthony Musaba. Rohl opted for two actual wingers in Djeidi Gassama and Musaba. When those two played together, Wednesday were often a threat. If one or the other played, defences would know what to expect: a ball out to the winger, who would get doubled up and taken out of the game. When both played, attacks were more unpredictable with both flanks being an outlet rather than just one. Windass was playing in his best spot just behind the striker. This allowed him to pick up the ball and create chances, as well as arrive late in the box and score. Leading the attack was Lowe, who we could see do the same for Wednesday this season.
