'Learnt a lot' - Blackpool FC legend makes feelings clear ahead of new season as he makes prediction
The League One season gets underway this weekend with Blackpool taking on Wycombe Wanderers.
Blackpool legend Brett Ormerod believes the Seasiders have what it takes to mount a promotion push if they’re able to strengthen a ‘lightweight’ area.
After starting the new EFL campaign with a 3-1 victory away to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup on Saturday afternoon, Ian Evatt’s side are in League One action this weekend against Wycombe Wanderers at Bloomfield Road.
Last season proved challenging for the Fylde Coast outfit, with the club finding itself in a relegation battle for long periods despite having the ambition of competing at the top end of the table.
Ormerod believes Evatt would’ve learnt a lot about his squad on the back of his appointment in October, and believes the club aren’t too far away from having what it takes to right last term’s wrongs.
“It’s a fresh season,” he said ahead of the Seasiders’ 3-1 win at Blundell Park.
“Everything’s reset from the summer. Hopefully the lads have had a good rest and have had a good pre-season behind them, so let’s hope it’s all positive.
“Last year was a shock to everyone. With the expectations, it didn’t work out, and it turned out to be a bit of a relegation battle.
“Evo (Ian Evatt) came into a team that was very low on confidence, and he had to pick them up. It was all good until Port Vale away on New Year’s Day, and then it dive bombed, so I think he’s learnt a lot about his team and his players.
“A couple more in the squad, and I can’t see why they can’t have a good promotion push. The centre half situation doesn’t look good at the moment, I think we’re a bit lightweight in that department, so they need to bring someone in to steady that area.”
